What are the visa requirements?
For participants planning to attend the PtD Global Indaba 2025 in Kigali, understanding the visa requirements is crucial for a smooth entry into Rwanda.
Visa on arrival
Rwanda has made visas available on arrival for all nationalities at Kigali International Airport and all land borders without prior application. This policy means you can obtain a visa upon your arrival in Rwanda.
Visa exemptions
To enter Rwanda for a short term visit, citizens of the following countries are able to travel in Rwanda without a visa: Angola, Benin, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Mauritius, Philippines, Qatar, Saint Kitts and Nevis, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda
Visa application online or at diplomatic missions
For those who prefer to secure their visa before travel, there’s an option to apply online (rwandavisas.org) or at a Rwandan diplomatic mission in your country of residence.
What is the local currency and how can I exchange money?
The Rwandan Franc is the local currency.
Exchanging money in Kigali is relatively easy and you have a few options:
Currency exchange counters
Airports, hotels and shopping malls often have currency exchange counters. While convenient, keep in mind that rates might not be as favourable as at other locations.
Banks
Banks in Kigali provide currency exchange services. You’ll need to present your passport and rates are usually competitive. Banks are typically open on weekdays during business hours.
ATMs
Using ATMs is a convenient way to get local currency. Make sure your card is compatible with international ATMs and inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues.
Currency exchange shops
There are many independent currency exchange shops throughout the city. Rates may vary, so it’s a good idea to compare before making a transaction.
Online money transfer services
Some travellers opt to use online money transfer services or withdraw cash from ATMs upon arrival for a competitive exchange rate.
Credit cards
Credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas but it’s advisable to have some cash for places that may not accept cards. Check with your bank about international transaction fees.
Hotel
The Kigali Marriott Hotel will be able to assist with currency exchange.
The current exchange rate is approximately USD1.00 to RWF1,376.00 (November 2024) – please be sure to check this when planning your trip.

What is the dress code for the conference?
Business casual
For men this could include trousers, polo shirts or button-down shirts and closed shoes. Ties are optional. National dress is welcome.
For women this could include trousers, skirts or dresses paired with blouses or sweaters. Closed-toe shoes or dressy sandals are typically acceptable. National dress is welcome.
The conference facilities will be air-conditioned, so a light sweater or wrap is recommended for those who feel the cold.
What is the language spoken?
Kinyarwanda is the most widely spoken language in Rwanda and serves as the official language alongside English, French and Swahili. Kinyarwanda is used in government, education and daily communications across the country. English and French have become increasingly prevalent, especially in business and education settings, and are widely understood in urban areas like Kigali. The official language of the Global Indaba is English and some translation facilities may be available.
Are there any vaccinations or health precautions I need to take?
There are currently no mandatory health requirements however it is important to check with the official Rwanda Development Board or the Ministry of Health for the most current health advice and to consult with a travel health professional well in advance of your trip for personalised advice based on your health status, the specifics of your travel and the latest health risks.
What will the weather be like during the conference?
In September, Kigali is transitioning into its short rainy season. Here are some general characteristics of the weather in Kigali during September:
Temperature: Daytime temperatures in Kigali typically range from about 15 to 26 degrees Celsius (59 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit). Days can be warm but not oppressively hot, with cooler evenings.
Humidity: Humidity begins to rise with the approach of the rainy season, making the air feel more humid. Staying hydrated is advisable.
Rainfall: September sees the onset of the short rainy season. You might experience rain on 10 to 13 days, with total rainfall around 70mm to 100mm. While it’s not as intense as the long rainy season, expect some intermittent showers.
Clothing: Light and breathable fabrics are ideal for daytime due to warmth, but due to the rain and cooler nights, it’s good to have waterproof clothing like a raincoat or an umbrella. Also, a light jacket or sweater for the evenings would be practical.
Keep in mind that these are general trends, and actual weather conditions can vary. It’s always a good idea to check a reliable weather forecast closer to your travel dates for more accurate information.
Are there any local attractions or places I should visit in my free time?
Kigali offers a range of fascinating attractions including the vibrant Kimironko Market for local shopping and the Inema Arts Centre for contemporary art lovers. Other must-see spots include the Nyamirambo Women’s Centre for cultural immersion, the Rwanda Art Museum in the former Presidential Palace and Mount Kigali for breathtaking city views. We suggest arriving a few days early or staying over the weekend after the event to explore more. For those with limited time, a visit to the Nyamirambo district can give you a taste of local life. There are numerous hospitals close to the conference venue and good healthcare is available in Kigali. Health and travel insurance is essential.
Can I drink the water in Kigali?
In general, it is not recommended to drink tap water in Kigali or in many parts of Rwanda. While improvements have been made to the water treatment infrastructure, it’s safer to err on the side of caution to avoid potential waterborne illnesses. Most hotels provide complimentary bottled water in guest rooms and you can easily purchase bottled water from local shops or supermarkets.
Are there shopping facilities close to the conference venue?
Yes – there are several shopping options near the Kigali Marriott Hotel. Within the hotel itself, you can find a gift shop for smaller purchases. Just a short distance away, the Union Trade Centre is less than a kilometre from the hotel, offering various shops and services. For a more extensive shopping experience, the Kigali Business Centre, about 6.3 km from the hotel, provides a range of retail outlets. Additionally, the hotel’s location in the Nyarugenge district means you’re close to numerous local markets and smaller shops where you can explore Rwandan crafts, textiles and more.
What are the cancellation terms and conditions?
Global Indaba registration fees
If cancelling more than 30 days before the Global Indaba a full refund is available. Thereafter if you are unable to attend the Global Indaba and have paid your registration fee a colleague can replace you – this must be done by writing to the conference managers info@upavon.co.za.
Hotel accommodation at the Kigali Marriott Hotel
1) One-night will be charged if cancelling after the reservation has been made.
2) The price of the full stay will be charged if cancelling after 2 August 2025. To modify or cancel the reservations or airport transfer requirements, please contact the event managers at info@upavon.co.za.
I have special dietary requirements; can these be accommodated?
Most special dietary requirements can be accommodated if notified in advance. There may be additional costs related to some, but these costs will be communicated well in advance. Please liaise with the event managers at info@upavon.co.za.
Will there be internet connection at the Kigali Marriott Hotel?
Yes – complimentary Wi-Fi is available to all attendees to the PtD Global Indaba and all hotel residents
